LUNT 50mm Solar Telescope - 6mm Blocking Filter - Helical Focuser - Zoom Eyepiece - LS50THa-3

Sky & Telescope 2015 Hot Product!

This LS50 Solar Telescope Feather Touch from Lunt Solar Systems is a 50mm H-alpha, unobstructed, pressure-tuned, dedicated Hydrogen-alpha telescope with a bandpass of <0.75 A. It includes a B600 blocking filter and zoom eyepiece.

The excitement of viewing our Star through a dedicated solar telescope is sure to provide many many hours of visual enjoyment and educational insights. Furthermore, this package is fully upgradeable at any time without ever having to go back to the factory.  Therefore, as the Sun becomes increasingly more active, you will appreciate that the instrument can grow right along with it.

The Lunt LS50THa Solar Telescope B600, complete with a Pressure Tuner,  provides the basic essentials perfect for a first time introduction to solar observing.  Also it including the newest technology for fine tuning, allowing basic research of the Sun’s disk and some surface details.

Doppler Tuning

True Doppler Tuning (Pressure Tuning) allows for a shift into and away from the user. Amazingly, this adds a 3D-like component to the viewing experience. Meanwhile it has minimal effect on proms due to their being at the edge of the disk, it does have an effect on filaments and active regions on the surface. Also, when looking at a filament at the center of the Sun, the user has the ability to Doppler shift from the base of the filament to the tip. Therefore, you’ll be able to follow the filament through it’s structure toward you and away from you.  All of this allows for enhanced visual and imaging capability for the observer as well as a research tool for the avid hobbyist. Most importantly, the pressure tuning system provides an order of magnitude more precision to the tuning of the desired features.

LS50THa Package Features:

Great, affordable telescope

Purchased the B600 option, single etalon, with the zoom lens. This is a great scope for the price. You can see surface features and prominences. A typical view will have the entire solar disc with a mid power eyepiece. It will take a high magnification eyepiece. Under winter, low Sun viewing, an Orion 6mm eyepiece worked well for some magnification.

The pressure tuning etalon works great. The Sun is 3Dish, and consistent. The helical focuser is adequate for visual use. I am able to get sharp views of the chromosphere details, and see prominences on the edge of the solar disc (they are small, but certainly visible). For photographic work, you may want to upgrade to the feathertouch focuser. The telescope has a solid feel to it. The components are mostly machined metal (with some plastic). The parts fit together well. And I am happy it is made in the USA.

Now, there are limitations. With a 350mm focal length, you do not have high magnification of the features. But, what you do see is very sharp and spectacular. Considering the price point of this telescope compared to it’s larger variations, I am very satisfied with the views.

In summary, you get great hydrogen alpha views for a descent price. If you have the budget, you can certainly do better with larger aperture models having better resolution and magnification. But, for this prices you get a lot. This is great for portable use (it does not need a heavy mount), can be a supplemental scope if you are a casual hydrogen alpha observer, and most importantly, is a way of enjoying hydrogen alpha without breaking the bank! I plan on using it for years to come (and upgrading to a double stack etalon).
